Adile Sultan, the daughter of Ottoman Sultan II. Mahmud and Zernigar Hatun, was born in Topkapı Palace in 1826. Raised with a modern education, Adile Sultan is an important figure who made contemporary advancements in the women's world. Known as the only female poet in the Ottoman dynasty, Adile Sultan is recognized for her contributions to the development of Kandilli, assistance to the poor, and dedicated efforts in education, particularly for orphaned girls.
In 1856, Sultan Abdülmecit wanted to gift the mansion he purchased to his beloved sister Adile Sultan as a summer residence. However, his wish could be fulfilled by his brother Sultan Abdülaziz after his death. In 1861, Sultan Abdülaziz, despite its unique view, demolished the dilapidated mansion and had the current palace built, reflecting the Western style of the 19th century.
Before her passing Adile Sultan donated the palace to the Ministry of National Education. In 1916, it began serving as the country's first boarding school for girls. Later, until the fire in 1986, the Adile Sultan Palace was used as Kandilli Girls' High School. Following extensive restoration after the major fire, it reopened in 2005 as a private venue for special events and activities.
